Matroids with at least two regular elements
For a matroid M , an element e such that both M \ e and M/e are regular is called a regular element of M . We determine completely the structure of non-regular matroids with at least two regular elements. Besides four small size matroids, all 3-connected matroids in the class can be pieced together from F7 or S8 and a regular matroid using 3-sums. This result takes a step toward solving a probl...
متن کاملMatroids with nine elements
We describe the computation of a catalogue containing all matroids with up to nine elements, and present some fundamental data arising from this catalogue. Our computation confirms and extends the results obtained in the 1960s by Blackburn, Crapo & Higgs. The matroids and associated data are stored in an online database, and we give three short examples of the use of this database.
متن کاملRegular Matroids with Graphic Cocircuits
In this paper we examine the effect of removing cocircuits from regular matroids and we focus on the case in which such a removal always results in a graphic matroid. The first main result, given in section 3, is that a regular matroid with graphic cocircuits is signed-graphic if and only if it does not contain two specific minors. This provides a useful connection between graphic, regular and ...
متن کاملCharacter Values at Regular Elements
There has been a good deal of work in the last decade or so on computing upper bounds of irreducible character values for finite simple groups [G1, G2, GM, LS2, LP, MS-P, R]. Some of this work concerns permutation groups, some groups of Lie type. Some is aimed at worst-case behavior, some at the character values of typical or at least fairly well-behaved elements. Various applications have been...
متن کاملFamilies of Regular Matroids
This is an introductory paper about the category of regular oriented matroids (ROMs). We compare the homotopy types of the categories of regular and binary matroids. For example, in the unoriented case, they have the same fundamental group but we show that the higher homotopy groups are different for rank three regular and binary matroids. We also speculate on the possible impact of a recent th...
